On 5th September 2025, the UK’s electricity generation saw significant fluctuations in carbon intensity, highlighting the importance of being mindful about when we use our appliances. At Jaxi, we aim to keep you informed so that together, we can make smarter energy choices that reduce emissions and support a more sustainable grid.

Morning Low: Cleaner Energy Opportunity
Between 3:00 AM and 3:30 AM, the UK experienced a low carbon intensity level of just 99 gCO₂/kWh. This was one of the cleanest periods of the day for electricity use, thanks to a higher share of renewable energy sources during off-peak hours. It’s an ideal time to schedule energy-intensive tasks like running dishwashers, washing machines, or charging electric vehicles.

Evening Peak: High Emissions Alert
Unfortunately, as demand increased later in the day, the carbon intensity rose to high levels. The highest recorded emission intensity was 208 gCO₂/kWh at 6:30 PM, with elevated levels continuing until around 10:00 PM. During these hours, fossil fuel generators, often including coal plants, are brought online to meet demand, resulting in higher emissions.

Key Carbon Intensity Data for 5th Sep 2025:

  • Lowest actual intensity: 98 gCO₂/kWh at 12:30 PM
  • Highest actual intensity: 208 gCO₂/kWh at 6:30 PM

Why Carbon Intensity Matters
Carbon intensity measures the grams of CO₂ emitted per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂/kWh) of electricity used. Lower values indicate cleaner power, typically from wind, solar, hydro, or nuclear sources. Higher values often mean fossil fuels are being used to meet electricity demand. By aligning your energy usage with low-carbon periods, you can significantly reduce your personal contribution to greenhouse gas emissions.

Jaxi’s Energy Saving Tip:
Try to use major appliances—like washing machines, dryers, ovens, or electric vehicle chargers—during times of low carbon intensity. Not only will this help lower your carbon footprint, but it also helps ease strain on the national grid during peak times.

Stay connected with Jaxi for real-time carbon intensity updates, and join us in making smarter energy decisions. Together, we can power a greener, more sustainable future for the UK.
