Carbon Intensity Update: 4th September 2025

The carbon intensity of electricity generation in the UK is a key indicator of how environmentally friendly our energy consumption is. On the 3rd and early hours of the 4th of September 2025, carbon emissions varied significantly throughout the day, offering some useful insights for conscious energy users.

What is Carbon Intensity?
Carbon intensity measures the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity consumed. The lower the number, the greener the energy – indicating a higher contribution from renewable sources such as wind, solar, and hydro power. Higher numbers often reflect the use of fossil fuels like coal or gas to meet electricity demand.

When Was Electricity the Cleanest?
Yesterday saw a period of low carbon intensity between 11:00 PM and 4:00 AM, with readings ranging from 66 to 86 gCO2/kWh. The cleanest point occurred right at midnight, with just 70 gCO2/kWh – a sign that much of the electricity came from renewable sources during this time.

When Did Emissions Peak?
As expected, carbon intensity began climbing from 4:00 AM, reaching moderate levels by the morning peak and continuing to rise through the day. The highest recorded level was 174 gCO2/kWh around 7:00 PM. While forecasts anticipated even higher emissions during this time, the actual data revealed slightly cleaner electricity than predicted, with an actual intensity of 169 gCO2/kWh.

Understanding These Trends
The transition from low to moderate intensity closely aligns with the UK’s typical daily routine. As more people wake up and businesses begin operations, demand for electricity increases. When renewable energy can’t fully meet this demand, fossil fuel-based generators are brought online, increasing CO2 emissions.

How You Can Help
Staying informed about carbon intensity levels allows you to make smarter energy choices. For example, running high-consumption appliances—like dishwashers, washing machines, and EV chargers—during low-intensity periods can significantly reduce your personal carbon footprint.

Jaxi is committed to helping users track real-time carbon intensity so they can make environmentally responsible decisions about when to use electricity. When demand is low and renewable sources are abundant, carbon intensity drops—making it the best time to power up.

Together Toward a Greener Future
Every step taken to reduce electricity usage during high carbon intensity periods contributes to a cleaner grid and a greener planet. Over time, such small changes on an individual level can help reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support the UK’s journey toward net zero emissions.

Stay tuned to Jaxi for daily updates, and join us in making smarter, cleaner energy choices.
