UK Carbon Intensity Update for September 29, 2025:

Monitoring carbon intensity is key to understanding the environmental impact of electricity usage. At Jaxi, we aim to empower users with real-time carbon intensity data so you can make smarter energy choices—like when to run high-energy appliances—to help reduce your carbon footprint. Here’s the latest overview of the UK’s carbon intensity over the past 24 hours.

🔴 High Carbon Intensity (230-250 gCO2/kWh):
From late evening on September 28 (around 11:00 PM) to the early morning of September 29 (up to 6:30 AM), the UK experienced high carbon intensity levels, ranging between 224 and 250 gCO2/kWh. This indicates a significant dependency on fossil fuel-based generation, particularly during lower renewable availability periods overnight.

⚠️ Very High Carbon Intensity (>250 gCO2/kWh):
The peak intensity was recorded between 5:00 AM and 6:30 AM, reaching up to 252 gCO2/kWh. These spikes typically occur when energy demand increases while renewable sources like wind and solar are not yet contributing significantly, prompting the use of coal or gas-powered generators.

🟡 Moderate Carbon Intensity (169-177 gCO2/kWh):
Between 9:30 AM and 12:30 PM on September 29, the carbon intensity dropped to moderate levels as greener energy sources began contributing more effectively. This window is a more sustainable period for using electricity-intensive appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, or EV chargers.

🔴 Return to High Levels in Afternoon:
After midday, carbon intensity rose again, hitting high levels from 12:30 PM onward. The most notable peak occurred around 3:30 PM with actual emissions reaching approximately 220 gCO2/kWh. Demand likely outpaced renewable supply, causing grid reliance on fossil fuels once again.

✅ Evening Improvement:
By the evening, emissions gradually decreased. By 10:30 PM, the UK returned to moderate intensity levels, ending the day on a more sustainable note thanks to reduced demand and better renewable integration.

Why This Matters:
When demand is high and renewable resources are limited, the power grid relies on carbon-heavy generators like coal and gas. Not only does this increase emissions, but it also impacts the cost and sustainability of energy. By aligning appliance use with low-carbon periods, you help reduce strain on the grid and cut down on greenhouse gases.

Smart Tip from Jaxi:
Track daily carbon intensity with Jaxi and schedule energy-heavy tasks during low-emission periods. Together, we can lower individual impact and support a greener UK energy system.
