ππ Carbon Intensity Update for the UK: September 21st, 2025
Today brought promising news for environmentally conscious energy users across the UK. Carbon intensity levels remained mostly low throughout the day, making this one of the best times to use electricity while keeping your carbon footprint minimal. Hereβs a breakdown of how the day unfolded and what it means for your energy choices.
π Midnight – 3 AM: The day began with strong momentum, as actual emissions averaged just 81 gCO2/kWh. These values fall into the ‘low’ carbon intensity range, offering an excellent opportunity for overnight appliance use with reduced environmental impact.
βοΈ Morning (6 AM – 12 PM): Carbon intensity reached some of its lowest levels during this period, dipping to an impressive 44-55 gCO2/kWh. If you timed your high-energy activities during these hours β such as running dishwashers or charging electric vehicles β you helped reduce demand on fossil-fuel-based generation.
β° Afternoon Focus (12 PM – 4 PM): As expected, intensity levels saw a slight upward trend. While still relatively favorable, emissions climbed gradually to 72-84 gCO2/kWh. It’s a good reminder that midday usage should be managed thoughtfully, especially when planning tasks that consume significant power.
π Evening Shift (5 PM – 8 PM): Peak demand hours drove carbon intensity up, reaching a daily high of 122 gCO2/kWh. During this time, renewable sources often can’t meet rising consumption needs, prompting reliance on backup generators, including coal and gas-powered plants. Reducing usage during this period helps avoid triggering less sustainable energy generation.
π Night (8 PM onwards): Fortunately, carbon levels eased again into the evening, dropping back to 72-99 gCO2/kWh. This makes late-night usage a better option compared to peak evening hours.
