UK Carbon Intensity Update for 21st October 2025:

Monitoring carbon intensity is key to reducing your environmental impact while using electricity. At Jaxi, we’re committed to helping you make smarter energy decisions by sharing daily carbon intensity updates. On October 21st, 2025, the UK saw multiple opportunities throughout the day to use electricity more sustainably — a step forward in our journey toward a greener future.

What is Carbon Intensity?
Carbon intensity refers to the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity consumed. It varies depending on how electricity is generated — renewable sources like wind and solar produce minimal emissions, while fossil fuels such as coal and gas contribute higher CO2 levels.

Daily Insights – October 21st:

  • Midnight to Early Morning (00:00 – 04:30): The carbon intensity ranged between 116 to 84 gCO₂/kWh. These early hours presented a good window for energy use with relatively moderate emissions.
  • Morning to Midday (04:30 – 11:30): This period recorded some of the lowest carbon intensity of the day, consistently staying below 100 gCO₂/kWh, with a low point of just 84 gCO₂/kWh at 04:30. This was an excellent time to run high-energy appliances like washing machines or dishwashers.
  • Midday to Afternoon (11:30 – 16:00): The carbon intensity remained at low to moderate levels, offering another sustainable window for energy consumption. During this period, electricity generation remained relatively clean.
  • Evening Hours (16:00 – 23:00): Surprisingly, evening hours — typically periods of higher demand — returned to lower carbon intensity. From 18:30 onwards, intensities dropped further, with the day’s lowest level recorded at just 56 gCO₂/kWh.

Plan Your Energy Use Wisely
Electricity demand often peaks during morning and evening hours. When renewable sources are insufficient to meet demand, traditional fossil fuel generators may be used, increasing carbon emissions. By aligning your energy usage with low-carbon periods, you can help reduce reliance on polluting sources and support the integration of cleaner energy into the grid.

Why It Matters
Utilising electricity during low carbon intensity periods not only saves costs during off-peak times but also contributes to a net reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Small changes in daily habits, like charging devices or running major appliances during these windows, can add up to significant positive environmental impact.

Jaxi’s real-time energy insights help you stay informed and empowered to make eco-friendly choices every day. Let’s keep working together to lower carbon emissions and promote cleaner electricity use across the UK.
