UK Carbon Intensity Update for 1st October 2025
At Jaxi, we’re committed to keeping you informed about the UK’s daily carbon intensity levels so that you can make smarter decisions when using electricity. By aligning your energy use with periods of low carbon emissions, you help reduce greenhouse gas output and support a more sustainable energy future.
Here’s a detailed breakdown of today’s carbon intensity levels across the UK electricity grid:
Midnight to Morning
From 23:00 on 30th September until 06:00 on 1st October, carbon intensity remained at a moderate level. Values ranged between 126 and 184 gCO₂/kWh, with the highest point recorded at 184 gCO₂/kWh between 05:30 and 06:00.
Morning to Afternoon
Between 06:00 and 16:30, carbon intensity held steady at moderate levels. However, from 15:30 onwards, emissions began to rise sharply. The peak for the day occurred between 17:00 and 18:00 with a high of 197 gCO₂/kWh.
Evening Overview
High carbon intensity persisted through the early evening hours—from 16:00 to 19:30—as the national demand for electricity remained elevated. After 19:30, emissions began to decline, reaching moderate levels by 20:00. From 21:30 to 23:00, carbon intensity dropped to low, hitting a minimum of 83 gCO₂/kWh between 22:30 and 23:00.
Best Time to Use Electricity Today
If you’re looking to reduce your carbon footprint, the best time to run energy-intensive appliances—such as washing machines, dishwashers, or electric vehicle chargers—is during the low carbon intensity window from 21:30 to 23:00. During this period, emissions were between 99 and 83 gCO₂/kWh.
Why Carbon Intensity Matters
Carbon intensity measures how much CO₂ is released to generate one kilowatt-hour of electricity. When demand is high and renewable sources such as wind and solar are insufficient, fossil fuel-based generators (like coal or gas) are often used to meet the shortfall—raising the carbon intensity of the grid. By shifting your power usage to times when carbon intensity is low, you help minimise the reliance on these polluting sources.
At Jaxi, we aim to empower individuals and households with real-time data and insights into energy usage. Making small changes today can lead to a cleaner, greener UK tomorrow.
