Stay informed with Jaxi’s latest carbon intensity update for the UK. On 14th September 2025, the electricity grid experienced encouraging levels of low carbon intensity throughout most of the day. By understanding when carbon emissions are at their lowest, you can make smarter choices about when to use your household appliances — helping reduce environmental impact and promote greener energy habits.

Why Carbon Intensity Matters

Carbon intensity measures how many grams of CO2 are emitted to produce one kilowatt-hour (gCO2/kWh) of electricity. When demand spikes and renewable sources like wind and solar can’t meet the load, fossil fuel-based generators — including coal-fired power stations — step in. These have much higher carbon outputs. Monitoring carbon intensity helps users shift electricity usage to cleaner periods, reducing both emissions and reliance on non-renewables.

Here’s what the data shows for 14th September:

  • Early Morning (12 AM – 6 AM): Carbon intensity started at low levels between 83 and 105 gCO2/kWh. Notably, around 2 AM we saw a brief rise into “moderate” territory at 105 gCO2/kWh.
  • Morning Hours (6 AM – 12 PM): Moderate intensity persisted early in the morning, peaking at 135 gCO2/kWh by 5:30 AM. Fortunately, levels improved toward midday with a drop back to 85 gCO2/kWh.
  • Afternoon (12 PM – 6 PM): A great window for eco-conscious energy usage! Low carbon intensity dominated the afternoon, maintaining between 73 and 78 gCO2/kWh — ideal for running appliances like washing machines and dishwashers.
  • Evening (6 PM – 12 AM): The day closed with clean energy levels, reaching a low of 55 gCO2/kWh around 9 PM — one of the greenest periods of the day.

How You Can Help

Using electricity during low carbon intensity periods supports the grid’s transition to renewable energy and reduces the need for fossil fuels. Small actions, such as running high-energy appliances during cleaner times, contribute to a more sustainable future.

Keep an eye on our daily updates and use tools like the Jaxi app to track carbon intensity in real-time. Together, we can make conscious energy choices that benefit both your wallet and the planet.

Check back tomorrow for the next carbon intensity update. Let’s keep working towards a cleaner, greener UK.
