At Jaxi, we’re committed to helping our users make smarter energy choices by providing real-time updates on UK carbon intensity. As the demand for electricity fluctuates, so does the mix of energy sources used to meet that demand — and unfortunately, when renewable options are insufficient, fossil fuels like coal may be used, resulting in higher emissions.
Carbon Intensity Overview: 13th–14th October 2025
Over the past 24 hours, the UK’s carbon intensity levels have remained elevated, indicating a heavier reliance on non-renewable energy sources. Understanding these fluctuations can help households and businesses plan their energy use around cleaner periods, contributing to a lower overall carbon footprint.
- Very High Carbon Intensity: Between 11:00 PM on October 13th and 1:00 AM on October 14th, emissions reached approximately 261g CO₂/kWh. These “very high” levels resurfaced from 3:30 AM to 12:30 PM and again between 3:00 PM and 9:30 PM.
- High Carbon Intensity: During the early morning hours from 1:00 AM to 3:00 AM, and later from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, carbon intensity slightly decreased to between 245–249g CO₂/kWh, categorised as “high”.
- Late-Day Improvement: After 9:30 PM on October 14th, the carbon intensity began to improve, although it remained within the “high” range.
These peaks in carbon intensity typically occur during periods of high electricity demand, when renewable energy sources such as wind and solar are either inadequate or unavailable. When this happens, backup generators powered by fossil fuels are often brought online, leading to increased emissions.
By staying informed about daily carbon intensity patterns, Jaxi users can better decide when to operate energy-intensive appliances — such as washing machines, dishwashers, or electric vehicle chargers — during times when the grid is cleaner. This small change can lead to big environmental benefits over time.
We’re continuing to advocate for greater use of renewable energy and improved grid efficiency. In the meantime, making informed decisions about when and how you use electricity can play a powerful role in supporting a more sustainable future.
Stay tuned for daily carbon intensity updates right here on Jaxi, and do your part to reduce emissions — one smart energy choice at a time.
