UK Carbon Intensity Update – September 12, 2025
Today’s carbon intensity insights help you make smarter energy choices while supporting the environment. At Jaxi, we aim to keep our users updated with real-time electricity carbon data so you can plan your energy usage when it’s cleanest.
What is Carbon Intensity?
Carbon intensity refers to the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) emitted to produce one kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity. Lower values mean cleaner, more sustainable energy sources are in use like wind, solar, and hydro. Higher carbon intensity often points to increased dependency on fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas.
Today’s Carbon Intensity Breakdown:
- Midnight to 5:00 AM: The UK saw impressively low carbon intensity values ranging from 51 to 58 gCO2/kWh. This time frame was ideal for running appliances like dishwashers or charging electric vehicles.
- Morning to Afternoon: Carbon intensity remained low throughout most of the day, showcasing a strong presence of renewable energy generation. The peak value during this period reached 86 gCO2/kWh at around 4:30 PM.
- Evening Peak (5:00 PM – 8:00 PM): As demand surged, carbon intensity rose sharply to moderate levels, peaking at 125 gCO2/kWh. This increase suggests that backup fossil-fuel generators were activated to meet the higher electricity demands.
- Post 8:00 PM: By the evening, carbon intensity declined again, dropping to between 61 and 62 gCO2/kWh as demand decreased and renewables were able to take on a larger share of generation.
Why This Matters:
By shifting your electricity use to times when carbon intensity is low, you’re helping to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and support a cleaner grid. It’s an effective way to lower your household’s carbon footprint without changing your lifestyle significantly.
Using smart tools from Jaxi, you can track carbon intensity forecasts and receive personalised tips on when to run specific appliances to minimise environmental impact.
