On 12th November 2025, the UK’s carbon intensity data revealed significant fluctuations in the environmental impact of electricity generation throughout the day. At Jaxi, we are committed to keeping our users informed about these changes so you can make smarter, greener decisions about when to use energy-intensive appliances.
Carbon intensity, measured in grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour (gCO₂/kWh), reflects how much carbon dioxide is released to produce the electricity we use. Lower values indicate a cleaner, more sustainable energy mix, while higher values suggest increased reliance on fossil fuels such as coal or natural gas.
Low Carbon Intensity Periods
Midnight to 8:30 AM: During the early morning hours, the grid operated with lower carbon emissions, recording levels between 42 and 97 gCO₂/kWh. This period is ideal for using appliances like dishwashers, washing machines, or charging electric vehicles, as the energy comes from cleaner sources.
8:30 PM to Midnight: Carbon intensity dropped again later in the evening, reaching lows of around 55 gCO₂/kWh. This is another optimal time to run high-energy appliances with minimal environmental impact.
Moderate Carbon Intensity Periods
8:30 AM to 4:30 PM: As the day progressed, carbon intensity values rose, peaking at 170 gCO₂/kWh by late afternoon. This indicates a shift away from renewables towards more carbon-intensive energy sources due to higher electricity demand. It’s advisable to limit non-essential energy usage during these hours if possible.
High Carbon Intensity Alert
4:30 PM to 5:00 PM: For a short period, carbon intensity reached 181 gCO₂/kWh, categorising it as high. This spike typically occurs when renewable sources like wind and solar cannot meet peak demand, prompting the grid to activate backup fossil fuel-based generators. Avoiding energy-heavy activities during this time can contribute to reducing your carbon footprint.
Monitoring daily carbon intensity can empower you to align your energy usage with greener production times. At Jaxi, we’re here to help you plan smartly and sustainably by using real-time and daily updates on carbon intensity data.
By shifting your electricity usage to times of lower carbon intensity, not only do you save money in certain tariff structures, but you also actively support the transition to a cleaner energy grid. Let’s work together to reduce carbon emissions and move toward a greener future!
