UK Carbon Intensity Update – 10th October 2025
Understanding carbon intensity is key to making smarter and greener energy decisions. At Jaxi, we’re committed to helping you reduce your carbon footprint by keeping you informed about real-time electricity carbon intensity in the UK. Here’s how the carbon output has shaped up over the past 24 hours.
Moderate Carbon Intensity Hours
On the night of 9th October, carbon intensity remained within moderate levels. Between 23:00 and 23:30, the forecast was 138g CO₂/kWh, with actual emissions measured at 140g CO₂/kWh. As we moved into the early hours of 10th October, the intensity fluctuated slightly but stayed moderate, peaking at 147g CO₂/kWh by 02:30.
Transition to High Intensity
From 04:30, carbon intensity rose above moderate levels, signifying increased reliance on fossil fuel-based generation. Between 04:30 and 05:00, the forecast was 165g CO₂/kWh, with actual emissions reaching 182g CO₂/kWh, marking the start of a high-intensity period. These elevated levels continued into the morning and afternoon.
Peak High Intensity Hours
The day saw two major peaks in carbon intensity:
- Morning Peak (06:00 – 08:30): Forecasted carbon levels hovered around 200g CO₂/kWh, corresponding with increased energy demand.
- Evening Peak (17:00 – 19:30): This window saw the day’s highest intensity levels, with actual emissions reaching between 213g and 218g CO₂/kWh.
Late Evening Easing
Post 20:30, carbon intensity began to decline gradually but remained in the high range well into the late evening hours.
Why Carbon Intensity Matters
When electricity demand surges, the grid may rely on non-renewable sources like coal or gas, leading to higher carbon intensity. By monitoring these patterns, you can make informed decisions about when to use high-energy appliances, helping reduce strain on the grid and minimise emissions.
How You Can Help
By shifting energy use to lower intensity periods—typically late at night or during high renewable generation—you can play a part in reducing overall carbon emissions. Timing your usage of high-consumption appliances like washing machines, dryers, and electric vehicle chargers can have a real environmental impact.
At Jaxi, we’re making it easier to track and respond to carbon intensity in real time. Stay tuned for daily updates and actionable insights to help build a low-carbon energy future for the UK.
